While in office he ordered officials to remove all “white” and “colored” signs from facilities in city hall and he was also one of the only white southern politicians to testify before Congress on behalf of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
He, along with former mayor Maynard Jackson , were featured in the 1971 cook Mayor: Notes on the Sixties.
He married Louise Richardson in 1936. The couple had three sons: Ivan Allen III, Hugh Inman, and Beaumont.
